How do you convert a monthly salary to an hourly wage?

By dividing your yearly salary by your working hours in the year. The Dutch government counts those hours like this: workable days (Monday to Friday) × hours per day. 2026 has 261 workable days, so a 40-hour week is 2,088 hours a year, 174 hours a month on average.

Hourly wage = monthly salary × 12 ÷ (workable days × hours per day)
Example: €3,000 × 12 ÷ (261 × 8) = €17.24 per hour

The government advises not to round in between, to avoid underpaying. Source: Rijksoverheid, fixed monthly wage example (Dutch).

Many employers and collective agreements use 52 weeks a year instead (4.33 weeks a month). That gives €17.31 per hour for €3,000 at 40 hours. Check your contract or cao for the method your employer uses.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a month do you work on a 40-hour week?

On average 174 hours in 2026: 261 workable days × 8 hours = 2,088 hours a year, divided by 12. This is how the Dutch government (Rijksoverheid) works out average hours per month.

What is the Dutch minimum wage per month on a 40-hour week?

€2,608.26 gross per month from 1 July 2026, for employees aged 21 and over: €14.99 per hour × 2,088 hours ÷ 12. Since 2024 there is no fixed monthly minimum wage; it depends on your hours.

What is the difference between gross and net hourly wage?

Your gross hourly wage is what your employer pays per hour before wage tax. Your net hourly wage is what reaches your bank account per hour worked. On low pay the difference is small because of the tax credits.

Does my employer calculate it the same way?

Not always. Many employers and collective agreements (cao) use 52 weeks a year. For €3,000 a month at 40 hours that gives €17.31 per hour instead of €17.24. Check your contract or cao for the method your employer uses.
